The ICC 2019 World Cup is done and dusted but there’s a lot more cricket happening in the same country and on the same grounds as the CWC 2019. This is the T20 Blast 2019 and the season kicks off on 18th July with the first three of 133 T20s scheduled on the opening day. Apart from Middlesex vs Essex, another game that’s happening in another part of England is Glamorgan vs Somerset, also kicking off at the same time.
Somerset topped the South Group in the 2018 T20 Blast with 10 wins in 14 games and eventually went on to lose in the semi-finals against Sussex. As for Glamorgan, they didn’t have the best of seasons last year, with 7 wins in 14 games. Stats
- Glamorgan finished 6th in South Group in 2018.
- Somerset finished 1st in South Group in 2018.
- Last 5 games head to head, these teams are tied 2-2.
- Mitchell Marsh – not dismissed in 4 ODIs for AUS-A recently.
- Babar Azam – 474 runs in 8 ODIs at CWC 2019.
Glamorgan
One of the biggest positives for Glamorgan is the signing of Fakhar Zaman. The Pakistani batsman has been in England for a couple of months now, playing a few games here before the World Cup as well. He didn’t have the best of tournaments at CWC 2019 but he had a few centuries before that and back to his favourite format, he could be lethal. He will be available for the first eight games for Glamorgan at the 2019 T20 Blast.
All-rounders are a must in T20 cricket and for me, Mitchell Marsh is one of the best going around. He picked up 5 wickets for Australia A recently in 4 games, and wasn’t dismissed even once. However, he returns after 4 games for Glamorgan and won’t be available initially. Colin Ingram is the captain and a fine middle-order T20 batsman, so he’s worth including your fantasy team as well. Another good all-rounder is 36-year old Graham Wagg who scored a fifty, a century and bagged 11 wickets in his last 5 First Class games for Glamorgan.
Somerset
If Glamorgan picked up Zaman, then Somerset signed Babar Azam who had 3 fifties and a century in CWC 2019 and a couple of more centuries in England prior to that, so he must be part of your Nostragamus (sign-up with “READSCOOPS” for Rs.100 FREE) fantasy picks. Another overseas pick for the T20 season is that of Caribbean fast bowler Jerome Taylor, who has 26 wickets in his last 5 First Class games for Jamaica.
Lewis Gregory takes over the reins as T20 captain and he has had 20 wickets in his last 4 First Class games while also getting a few decent scores with the bat. Talking about all-rounders, we have former South African and current Duch cricketer Roelof van der Merwe who had an outstanding series against Zimbabwe recently, including 75* in the 1st T20 and 4/35 in the 2nd T20 earlier this month.
