In Round 1 of the 2019 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, 18 games are scheduled on the same day and one of these games is between Tripura and Vidarbha in Thiruvananthapuram, and both will be wanting to begin their respective campaigns with a win. At the same time at a ground nearby we also have Kerala taking on Tamil Nadu, the latter being the 2019 Vijay Hazare finalists.
It’s not too often that we follow Tripura matches and Vidarbha are clear favourites for this encounter. The 37 teams are divided into a number of groups and both these games beginning at 9am are Group B matches. With rain in the venue recently, we expect a slower pitch good for spinners. Numbers
- Head to head in Syed Mushtaq Ali, these two teams haven’t played each other.
- Manisankar Murasingh – never wicketless in last 10 games for Tripura.
- Udiyan Bose last 2 scores for Tripura – 121 and 85.
- Ganesh Satish – 5 single-digit scores in last 8 innings.
- Akshay Karnewar – 12 wickets in 8 games at 2019 Vijay Hazare.
Tripura
The team will be captained by Manisankar Murasingh who has no great figures in recent games, but he has been extremely consistent with the ball for Tripura while also getting decent starts with the bat when needed. Top order batsman Udiyan Bose is a must have as he has a fifty and century in his last 2 games at the 2019 Vijay Hazare Trophy while also getting a fifty in his last Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 games earlier this year.
In 9 games at Vijay Hazare, Milind Kumar scored a couple of fifties, a couple of forties and a best of 103*, having failed only once with one single-digit score. Pick him for this consistency while Rana Dutta could be an interesting pick with the ball. He hasn’t played much recently but in the last Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he had 5 wickets in 5 games including a best of 4/20 against Puducherry.
Vidarbha
The evergreen Faiz Fazal captain Vidarbha and while he has been super consistent, I’ll skip him from today’s MyFab11 (sign-up with code “READAD46“) fantasy team as he will be expensive and T20 has never been his favoured format. All-rounders are key and with 9 wickets in his last 10 games plus a few handy knocks and IPL experience on his CV as well, Shrikant Wagh would be one of my first fantasy picks today.
Pacer Rajneesh Gurbani hasn’t been much in the action recently but he picked 3 wickets in 2 games at the Vijay Hazare Cup recently, so he could be someone worth picking. A good all-rounder pick can be Akshay Karnewar who was among the wickets recently while also having a best score of 70 at the Vijay Hazare tournament. Akshay Wakhare was also good there, picking 8 wickets in his last 3 games for Vidarbha.
