The women’s and men’s editions of the 2019/20 Super Smash have taken off together in New Zealand. This is the country’s premier T20 competition and it’s a direct ticket for many local players to the 2020 T20 World Cup squad. To kick start proceedings, we have Central Districts set to play Match 1 against Northern Knights and these two have enjoyed a great rivalry over the years.
The series will run between 13 December 2019 and 19 January 2020 and during this time, a total of 32 T20s will be played. The Central Stags are the defending champions of the Super Smash and it’s never easy to get past a team like them. Numbers
- Last 5 games head to head, Northern Knights leads 3-2.
- In the last T20 international here last month, England scored 241/3.
- Tom Bruce – 6 fifties in his last 7 games for Central Districts.
- Seth Rance – 11 wickets in last 4 List A games for Central Districts.
Central Districts
The Stags have named a 12-man squad and from them, either of Ryan Watson and Jayden Lennox will ave to sit out. The team will be led by an in-form Tom Bruce who scored 3 fifties in 5 List A games before coming here, while also having international experience to his name. To help with the bat is George Worker who has 2 centuries in recent games including 3/36 with the ball in a List A game a couple of weeks back.
Kieran Noema-Barnett is a good all-round pick, being a bits and pieces player who can be more than useful in the T20 format. Another fairly experienced player is Seth Rance who also represented NZ in a few international games. He’s been in great rhythm with the ball recently while let-arm spinner Ajaz Patel can be skipped as he hasn’t been picking as many wickets as he would’ve liked of late.
Northern Knights
He hasn’t done anything commendable in recent months has Anton Devcich but the opener and part-time bowler has experience across the globe in various T20 leagues and is even worth selecting as captain of your Howzat (sign-up with code “READ1234”) fantasy team. The side is being led by Joe Carter who had a decent List A tournament recently, and ended it on a high with 78* in the final game.
Ish Sodhi, Daryl Mitchell and Scott Kuggeleijn all have international experience and are usually a part of the T20 side when New Zealand is in action. If I had to choose only 2 from them, I’d leave out Sodhi as he only had 4 wickets in 5 games in the recent ODD tournament while prior to that, he only bagged 1 wicket in 3 T20 internationals at home against England.
