All through the time that Sri Lanka have been in this ‘transition phase’, they have been losing matches and series galore, but never fail to spring up some surprises every once in a way. The same happened in the 1st T20 between them and South Africa, which ended in a tie, and ultimately was won by the hosts. However, not many would’ve given the visitors a chance prior to the start of that game.
The same applies now to the 2nd T20 of this 3-match series, which will be played at Centurion. In the 1st T20, South Africa choked from needing 18 runs in 24 balls, so they won’t want to repeat the mistakes they made there. The 2nd however, provides a good chance to Sri Lanka, since Proteas have decided to rest quite a few of their key players for the rest of the series. Keep reading for our fantasy preview of the 2nd T20…

- 241/6 is the highest score here – South Africa, November 2009.
- 189/4 is the highest successful chase here – South Africa, February 2018.
- JP Duminy is the highest scorer here – 102 runs in 4 innings.
South Africa
I don’t think South Africa is testing new players for the ICC 2019 World Cup. Instead, they are resting their players. The biggest change from among these is dropping Faf du Plessis, giving over the captaincy to JP Duminy for the last 2 games, while other players to be rested include Kagiso Rabada, Quinton de Kock and Imran Tahir, all of whom have been major contributors in recent weeks.
With the ball, I’ve been highly impressed with Anrich Nortje so far, so he continues to be in my fantasy team – cheap and high-value. He’s going to be my only bowling-only option for South Africa, while you can select Andile Phehlukwayo, who is handy with the bat and a few wickets are almost guaranteed, picking 3/25 in the last game. Chris Morris could also be a good selection.
Sri Lanka
Now while Sri Lanka were brilliant with the ball in the 1st T20, they can’t win unless the batsmen start scoring runs. A lot of dependence will be on Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva, the latter making my team because he’s a bowling option as well. Mendis has been the only shining light on this tour, so he’ll be a popular pick. I’ll skip him for this game. It’s a risk but could end up being fruitful, especially since his duck in the last game.
Jeffrey Vandersay has been around since a few years but has barely played at the international level due to injuries and other circumstances. He picked up 1/25 in the 1st T20 and he’ll be my only bowler pick from Sri Lanka. The rest of my wicket takers will have to be from the all-rounders de Silva and Thisara Perera.
