It’s been a fantastic last month or so of international cricket between Afghanistan and West Indies. First, we had the ODI series which was dominated by Windies, winning 3-0 at Lucknow. Then came the T20 series which Afghanistan did well to win 2-1. Now, the two play in a single test match at the same venue, playing each other in the longest format for the first time ever.
Afghanistan is coming into this game with a test victory against Bangladesh in their short test career so far. Given their recent performance in the latest T20 series and the fact that Windies is coming off a series loss against India, the Afghanis can certainly fancy their chances. Numbers
- Head to head, they play each other for the first time.
- Kraigg Brathwaite – 19 innings without a Test fifty.
- Rashid Khan – 20 wickets in only 3 Tests so far.
- Javed Ahmadi in his 2 Test innings so far – 3 and 1.
- Sunil Ambris – best score of 43 in 12 Test innings.
Afghanistan
Mohammad Nabi has retired from the longest form and they can find an able replacement in 21-year old Karim Janat who is also the brother of former captain Asghar Afghan. Janat picked up 5/11 and scored 26 in one of the T20s against Windies and he can be quite a useful addition to your fantasy team too. With 3 fifties and 245 runs in 3 Tests, Afghan himself is a great pick in the middle order.
Rashid Khan may have only 5 wickets in his last 10 professional games but he has an outstanding test record so far, which I don’t think he intends on changing. In recent months, he’s been working on his batting so I won’t leave him out for sure. Rahmat Shah is clearly the best batsman in the side with 1 century and 2 fifties in 3 Tests, but Javed Ahmadi might make a good pick too, being useful with the ball as well.
West Indies
Sunil Ambris is likely to open the batting as John Campbell was down with a stomach bug and we’re not sure if he’ll make the team. Rahkeem Cornwall didn’t take part in practice, strapped with an ice pack so a call will be taken on his participation too. Regardless, we want Roston Chase to be our main all-rounder, especially since his fantastic performances in the recent limited overs games too.
With the bat, Shai Hope hasn’t always had the best of results in Test cricket, but he scored 281 in 4 games against Afghanistan, dismissed only twice, so he’s worth picking in your Nostragamus (sign-up with “READSCOOPS” for Rs.100 FREE) fantasy team. Remember, he scored only 20 and 26 in the warm up game. Captain Jason Holder and Kemar Roach are two must-have bowlers in your fantasy side.
