The Malaysia T20 tri-series will run between 24-29 June 2019 and it will give us a breathe of fresh air, taking some attention away from the ongoing ICC 2019 World Cup. In the series opener, Malaysia played Thailand and it was a walk in the park for the home team, chasing down 114 with 5 wickets and 3 complete overs to spare.
Now, Malaysia play back to back games as they face off against Maldives, with the home team beginning as favourites once again. All matches will be played at the same Kinrara Oval which has a par score of just 118 runs in T20s as we saw in Match 1. Whoever bats first would be looking at posting 130+ to be safe. Stats
- Malaysia is ranked 33rd in the ICC T20 Rankings.
- Maldives is ranked 72nd in the ICC T20 Rankings.
- Last game – Malaysia chased down 114 in 17 overs.
Malaysia
Ahmad Faiz is the captain in case you’re unsure of who will make the playing eleven and who won’t. Faiz didn’t have the best game in the 1st T20, with only 11(16), but he is a useful middle order batsman. However, the star of the game against Thailand was all-rounder Muhamad Syahadat, who bowled an unbelievable spell of 3/7 in 4 overs to go with 41(32)* to finish off the chase so we know how valuable this player is to Malaysia.
Your wicket-keeper pick can also come from this team. Shafiq Sharif is the usual opener but he batted at one drop in the last game and bagged a golden duck. Not many will fancy him but he is certainly the better wicket-keeper choice from the two teams. Another valuable all-rounder is Virandeep Singh. Sadly, he also bagged a duck but he’s always in the game, opening the batting and usually bowling his quota too. He picked up 1/23 in 3 overs in the first game.
Maldives
Mohamed Mahfooz captains the side but honestly, he hasn’t had any big scores or great bowling spells in recent times. In fact, he hasn’t even taken a 2-wicket haul in his last 10 games for Maldives. Instead, pick up Ahmed Hassan as his last T20 games saw him scoring 53 against Qatar, while also being a regular wicket taker.
Maldives recently played in the ACC Western Region T20 Cup where Mohamed Rishwan ended as the highest run scorer with 147 runs in 4 T20s, including 2 fifties. With the ball, Ibrahim Hassan was the highest wicket-taker for Maldives by a long way in that tournament, with 9 wickets over the next best’s 3 wickets. Pick both of them in your Howzat (sign-up with code “READ1234”) fantasy team, if they make the playing 11.
