We’ve moved into Match 24 of the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) and here, Mumbai Indians are going to play host to Kings XI Punjab, with both teams coming into this game having won their respective last match. What’s interesting is that both teams won their last game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, which is said to be one of the best IPL teams in recent years. We can expect a high-octane clash here.
For the first time in forever, Mumbai Indians have managed to win 2 consecutive wins in the first half of an IPL season. 5 matches and 3 wins is what they have at the moment, currently placed at #5 on the IPL 2019 points table while Punjab have 4 wins in 6 games, currently #3 on the table. Stats
- In 4 games here in IPL 2019, 170+ has been achieved thrice so far.
- In the head to head count, MI lead KXIP 12-11.
- Chris Gayle has 5 fifties and averages 40+ against Mumbai.
- MI have no batsmen in the top 20 of the Orange Cap list; de Kock is at #21 with 133 runs in 5 games.
- KL Rahul is one of only 2 players to have 3 fifties in IPL 2019.
Mumbai
With both bat and ball, Mumbai don’t have anyone they can rely on. Both openers haven’t been making big scores, while no one has been taking wickets regularly. Jasprit Bumrah is at #18 in the Purple Cap list with 5 wickets in 5 games while Alzarri Joseph is their highest wicket taker of IPL 2019 even though he has played only one match. While Bumrah is the best in the world, I’ll skip him as he’s very popular in fantasy cricket and hasn’t been picking too many wickets either.
Now Lasith Malinga is back and available for selection but he may not be picked with Joseph’s 6-for in the last game. I’d suggest you skip both. I’m always in favour of selecting an all-rounder as your captain and both the Pandya brothers become brilliant choices. 32*, 31, 25*, 14 are Hardik’s scores in his last 4 innings, plus 4 wickets this season. Krunal has one good score and just 2 wickets, so I’d pick him as a normal player and not captain. Keep Kieron Pollard out as he hasn’t bowled a single over in IPL 2019.
Punjab
After a couple of failures to begin IPL 2019, KL Rahul has now hit a purple patch with scores like 71*, 55, and 71* in his last 4 innings for KXIP. His form and Gayle’s numbers against Mumbai means we could be in for a big opening partnership. Mayank Agarwal at #3 has been in good touch as well as Sarfaraz Khan at #4. With 39 and 67 in his last 2 innings, Khan may be a good option and I like the fact he has been promoted up the order this season.
One important player is going to be Sam Curran and he proved that it’s not for nothing that KXIP paid INR 7.2 Crore for him. Curran has 6 wickets in 4 games including a match-winning hat-trick, while he can be used as a floater in the batting order. Fancy Curran being the next Narine? He could make a good vice-captain pick. Ankit Rajpoot is someone who is a must-pick in your fantasy team. He bowled 0/21 in his 4 in the last game but his bounce and pace can get him plenty wickets in games to come.
