Currently, three teams are tied at the top of the points table with 3 wins in 4 matches in the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL). Of them, there are familiar faces like CSK and SRH but it’s refreshing to see a team like Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at the top. The question now is, how long can KXIP stay at the top? Last year, they lost 7 of their final 8 games after a good start to IPL 2018.
However, their next big game is this one (Match 18) against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), with the latter here to be a spoke in the wheel of Punjab. Chidambaram Stadium is like a fortress for CSK and it’s never going to easy to get past them at home. However, CSK have their own brewing problems like death overs bowling and the opening batsmen failing. In their last game, we saw how both together can cause big issues. Chennai
Just a couple of weeks back, we were talking about the rise of Ambati Rayudu and his importance for India at the 2019 ICC World Cup. However 4 games into IPL 2019 and the scenario is different, with scores of 28, 5, 1 and 0 so far. What’s worse is that his opening partner Shane Watson is also failing with scores of 0, 44, 13 and 5. For Watson, a big innings is always around the corner, but for Rayudu, the opener position is doing him well. Watson could lose his place to Faf du Plessis or Sam Billings.
Now remember, Dwayne Bravo has pulled his hamstring and his participation in this game is doubtful, so Faf may come in regardless. However, CSK will want to maintain that team balance that they are known for, which means Kiwi all-round Scott Kuggeleijn may get a CSK debut. With the ball, pick both of Chahar and Tahir, with the latter also making a good vice-captain option. All-rounders are always the best choice to make your captain. Harbhajan Singh might also return for Mohit Sharma.
Punjab
After that fantastic comeback win which saw them taking 8 wickets for 7 runs, Sam Curran is guaranteed to keep his place with his performance. However, Chris Gayle is ready to return to the squad. While he sit out? Or does he come in for Hardus Viljoen? I’ll pick Curran as my vice-captain and skip both of Gayle and Viljoen. Chances are KXIP retain Viljoen (winning combination) and he honestly hasn’t had much of an impact yet.
Punjab will have a slight issue with taking wickets here. So far in IPL 2019, four CSK bowlers are in the top 15 of the Purple Cap list, with KXIP have just two. Of these two is Sam Curran (6) who picked 4 wickets in the last game, prior to which he got 2 wickets but was hit for 52 runs. The other bowler is Mohammed Shami, who has 5 wickets in 4 games, but has gone the distance at 9.12 per over.
