It’s a rare sight to see the Delhi franchise in the top half of the Indian Premier League (IPL) standings, but courtesy that first win, they are there at the moment. However, Delhi Capitals now run into an in-form Kolkata Knight Riders, with the latter currently also sitting pretty at the top of the IPL 2019 points table, with 2 wins in 2 games. This the second game of the day after Punjab hosts Mumbai in Match 9.
It’s a battle between two captains who are looking for a spot in the Indian side for the 2019 ICC World Cup, so both will be looking to impress as captains and personally too. The Kotla pitch is not as good as it was last year for batsmen, so don’t expect 190+ scores to be chased with ease. Delhi
Shreyas Iyer finds himself among the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant, which keeps his talent completely under-shadowed. However, his role as a number 3 batsman is still a highly crucial one and it’s high time he starts putting up better contributions. Scores of 16 and 18 so far means he has starts but nothing more. Remember, Iyer had 2 centuries in the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, so there’s no shortage of form.
This batting line up will be put to the test as they face three highly talented and different spinners, so experience will count more than flair. Hence, Iyer and Dhawan will be my batting picks, while in the all-rounders slot, I want to have Chris Morris in my team, who is fit now, and should come in for Keemo Paul, who hasn’t had much of an impact on the team so far anyway. Delhi also have the option of bringing in Sandeep Lamichhane, but at whose expense? Will they drop an extra batter in Colin Ingram?
Kolkata
Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla. Experience, mystery and class. The 12 overs from these bowlers are very likely to yield less than 90 runs, while also getting a few wickets. One thing is for sure that Narine makes my team, as he is a pure ‘all-rounder’ these days. He scored 24 in 7 balls in his last game. Andre Russell too is the most dangerous all-rounder in world cricket at the moment, with two Man of the Match awards in two games.
Russell has scores of 49* and 48 in IPL 2019 so far, along with 4 wickets (2 in each game), so he automatically becomes my captain for this game, as he’s too hard to ignore. In the wicket-keeper section, Dinesh Karthik comes much lower than Pant but 80%+ teams have selected the latter, which dissuades me from doing the same. Regardless, I believe KKR has a plan in place for Pant, so I don’t see him scoring too much here at the Kotla.
