It’s going to be an exciting next couple of weeks as West Indies has made the tour to the sub-continent. They were already here, where they played Afghanistan over a month across all three formats. After losing the T20 series to Afghanistan 2-1, they now have a stiffer challenge as they play Team India in 3 T20s followed by 3 ODIs in a tour lasting from 6 to 22 December 2019.
India is as low as 5th in the ICC T20 Rankings while the world champions West Indies have fallen all the way down to 10th place in the rankings. However, they will look to regain their form as they bring a side that did very well in the recent CPL 2019 season back home. India will have selection troubles too. Numbers
- India has won ALL of their last 6 T20Is against West Indies.
- Deepak Chahar – T20I record figures of 6/7 in 3rd T20 vs Bangladesh.
- Rohit Sharma – 425 runs in 12 T20 internationals vs West Indies.
- Evin Lewis – 2 centuries in just 6 T20I games against India.
- Rishabh Pant hasn’t scored a fifty in 10+ innings for India now.
- Hayden Walsh Jr – 22 wickets in 9 games at CPL 2019.
India
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back in the side as Jasprit Bumrah is injured, but he only has 6 wickets in 9 games against West Indies in the T20 format. Instead, I’d rather pick Deepak Chahar who recently had world-record T20 figures, picked 12 wickets in 7 games at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Cup and has 20 in his last 10 overall games. Another wicket-taking option is Yuzvendra Chahal who had 2 wickets in his only previous T20 vs West Indies.
Both of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma love batting against this opposition in T20s. While Kohli has 3 fifties in 9 games, Sharma has 3 fifties and a century in 12 games against them. The middle order is going to be exciting with Manish Pandey and Shreyas Iyer in it. Iyer had a poor time at the Mushtaq Ali Trophy but ended on a high with 80* in the last game. He was brilliant against Bangladesh and even scored a career-best of 62 against them in the 3rd T20.
West Indies
Captain Kieron Pollard has matured immensely with the bat and he also tends to bring himself on to bowl, picking 3 wickets in 3 games against Afghanistan too, so I’ll add him to my Fantain (Use Code “READ123”) fantasy team. Talking about the batting order, there’s something about Evin Lewis playing against India, with both his career T20 tons coming against them, with a total of 242 runs in 6 T20Is against India.
Rishabh Pant has been having a poor time with bat and gloves, so my wicket-keeping pick will be Denesh Ramdin, who bats a bit lower down but his experience will help the side tremendously. Nicholas Pooran will miss the 1st T20I, currently serving a ban for ball tampering. After a fabulous CPL 2019 where he ended as top run scorer, Brandon Kong hasn’t found his feet in the national side, scoring only 51 runs in 4 internationals, so I’ll skip him.
