No more ICC 2019 World Cup but this new league is the actually hero, one which allows participation from a number of countries from around the world, in a country like Canada, where cricket needs development. It’s the return of the Global T20 Canada 2019 after a successful inaugural season last year. 6 teams will battle it out in 22 T20s between 25 July – 11 August at a new venue – Brampton, Canada.
Beginning the season is of course, defending champions Vancouver Knights, and they will be playing the team that ended at the bottom of the GT20 Canada 2018 points table, Toronto Nationals. First name on my team sheet is newly appointed Toronto captain Yuvraj Singh. Yuvi is one of the legends of the T20 game and while he didn’t have a major role in IPL 2019, he proved that he can still time the ball well, which can work in his favour here on these smaller grounds. We’re expecting Scotland’s Calum MacLeod to open the batting with UAE’s Chirag Suri and the former won the 2018 ICC Associate Player of the Year Award, so pick him.
Each team can play 5 overseas star players and with Yuvraj, Pollard and McClenaghan expected to play, Heinrich Klaasen may slot into the middle order. Sydney Thunder’s Chris Green is someone I’d love to have in my fantasy team because he is a clever bowler and has also been working on his batting in recent times. Vancouver Knights
The defending champions will be captained by the great Chris Gayle himself, who didn’t have a particularly good 2019 World Cup, but he has an ability to switch to another gear in these T20 leagues. Gayle didn’t even have a great outing in GT20 Canada 2018 but we expect him to do better this year and you can include him in your Nostragamus (sign-up with “READSCOOPS” for Rs.100 FREE) fantasy picks.
A name that can swing the entire balance of any game in the Knights’ favour is Andre Russell but we have reason to believe he is yet to recover from the injury he sustained at the World Cup, which may suggest Shoaib Malik playing in the middle order. USA swing bowler Ali Khan has impressed one and all at every stage including while playing for USA and even in the CPL. He hasn’t gone wicketless in his last 10 games and is a must-pick. The ever-consistent Rassie van der Dussen should also be picked.
