Usually, we’d be halfway through the Specsavers County Championship but because of the coronavirus lockdown, there hasn’t been any domestic cricket taking place in England. This year, we have a special, shortened version of the tournament called the 2020 Bob Willis Trophy which begins on 1st August 2020 and will feature all of the 18 First-Class counties, with crowds also being allowed in these games.
The tournament will see 3 regionalized groups of 6 teams each and every county will play 5 group matches each. The 2 winners of each group will progress to play a 5-day final. One of the games scheduled to be played on the opening day is between Essex County and Kent Spitfire which will be played at Chelmsford. Numbers
- Last 5 games head to head, Essex leads 3-1 with one draw.
- Alastair Cook – 12,200+ runs in a career of 161 Test matches.
- Dan Lawrence – 190 for Eng Lions against CA XI earlier this year.
Essex County
After his national retirement, Sir Alastair Cook signed a 3-year deal with Essex and he’s expected to be batting at the top as he has all through his cricket career. He was their top run scorer last year too with 913 runs in 14 FC games including 7 fifties and a century. With 83 wickets in the 2019 season, Simon Harmer ended at the top of the wicket-takers list and it would be a sin to leave him out of your ESS vs KET fantasy team.
Another player who you can’t miss from this ESS vs KET fantasy team is Dan Lawrence, a 23-year old who is close to getting his national call up too. He scored 2 big centuries for England Lions in February this year and had 700+ runs in this tournament last year, while picking wickets too. One of the best associate nations all-rounders ever, Ryan ten Doeschate is in the squad and I wouldn’t want to leave him out!
Kent Spitfire
Middle order batsman Zak Crawley scored 800+ runs last year and with 5 fifties and 2 centuries in that season, he was picked for the national side and he’s got 6 Tests for England so far, impressing in the recent West Indies series too, with a best of 76. With the ball, their leader in the 2019 County Championship was Matt Milnes who managed 55 wickets in 14 games during the course of the season.

Daniel Bell-Drummond is expected to be leading the side and with all of his experience, he’s someone who should be in your PlayerzPot (Use Code “READ1234“) fantasy team for this opening game of Kent. Along with him, Heino Kuhn from South Africa is in the squad and he’s also very experienced in the domestic circuit which makes him a good pick as well.
