It’s the second weekend at the ICC 2019 World Cup and once again, we have a double header for you guys to savour. In the first game of the day, it’s hosts England vs Bangladesh. A few hours later, we have Match 13 which takes place between Afghanistan and New Zealand. The Kiwis are the obvious favourites and have won both their games prior to this one, beating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets and then Bangladesh by 2 wickets.
On the other hand, Afghanistan have made the bottom spot their own so far, last on the CWC 2019 points table with 2 losses in 2 games. However, they have shown overs of brilliance so far and aren’t to be taken lightly. If they play well for the entire 50 overs, they can win. Not otherwise. Stats
- This is the 1st ODI at this ground in Taunton since May 1999.
- The highest score here is 373/6 by India vs Sri Lanka in 1999.
- Mohammad Shahzad in CWC 2019 so far – 0 and 7.
- Ikram Ali Khil scored 185 runs in 4 matches in the 2018 U-19 World Cup.
- In CWC 2015, New Zealand beat Afghanistan by 6 wickets.
Afghanistan
Afghanistan’s highest run-scorer in CWC 2015 was Mohammad Shahzad but he has been extremely unit this tournament and has now been ruled out of CWC 2019 with a knee injury. Ikram Ali Khil has been named as the replacement and will slot right in since AFG have no replacement wicket-keeper. Mujeeb Rahman as been unable to pick wickets, with only 9 in his last 10 ODIs, after picking 43 in his first 22 ODIs. With spin doing well for them, they might persist with him for another game.
The other spinners are Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan, both of who had successful IPL 2019 seasons for Sunrisers Hyderabad. You cannot leave out these two players, especially after Nabi’s 3-wicket over against Sri Lanka. Lower order batsman Najibullah Zadran has scores of 51 and 43 so far in CWC 2019 and he was the top scorer when these two sides met in the 2015 World Cup as well, with a run-a-ball 56.
New Zealand
It’s going to be another trial by spin for New Zealand, having lost 8 wickets in the chase of 245 vs Bangladesh and 6 of them to spin. With conditions helping spinners, New Zealand may consider playing their own spinner in Ish Sodhi. Colin de Grandhomme has had the smallest role so far in CWC 2019 for New Zealand, so he’s most likely to make way; pick Sodhi in your Rotobash (sign-up to get Rs.100 FREE) fantasy team.
Pacers Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson and Trent Boult have had 7, 4 and 3 wickets each so far in the tournament, which means Tim Southee is likely to sit out again, even though he is now 100% fit. Henry has been my x-factor player since the start of this tournament since he bangs the ball in hard, while Boult cannot be dropped, as he is one of the best in the tournament. With the bat, ensure you pick Ross Taylor, who scored 82 vs Bangladesh and is the highest averaging batsman after Kohli since the 2015 World Cup.
