The tournament is fast progressing and we have already reached Match 11 of the ICC 2019 World Cup in England and Wales. Here, we have Pakistan vs Sri Lanka which promises to be a brilliant game of cricket between two Asian giants. Both began their CWC 2019 campaigns with crushing losses and both came back strong to win their second respective games. Now, both PAK and SL have 1 win in 2 games in the tournament.
Sri Lanka’s last win against Afghanistan wasn’t as impressive because they did do a lot wrong in that game. However, Pakistan was flawless and looked threatening throughout the game, beating the hosts and World Cup favourites England by 14 runs. We expect Pakistan to get another victory here. Stats
- Pakistan scored 358/9 here earlier this month (vs ENG); lost by 6 wkts.
- Pakistan have won 1 of their 2 previous ODIs here.
- Sri Lanka have won NONE of their 3 previous ODIs here.
- Imam ul Haq scored 151 in his only previous ODI here.
- Babar Azam has scored 717 runs in 12 games since landing in England.
Pakistan
Now everyone knows this is going to be a massive run-scoring ground, considering England won with 5+ overs to spare when Pakistan scored 358 here a couple of weeks back. Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam are the men in for Pakistan, each scoring 3 centuries since landing in UK. Azam is more reliant while Zaman seems to be liking these pitches, also having scored 500+ runs ever since coming here. Dropping one of these guys (probably Zaman) for Imam ul Haq is a gamble but it could pay dividends.
With a strong batting line-up, I haven’t found the need to pick the likes of Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez since they bat so low down the order. However, Pakistan adopted the strategy of playing 4 bowlers which means both these all-rounders have to complete 10 overs among themselves. 84 runs and a wicket in the last game means Hafeez is keen on finishing his CWC career on a high; pick him as your vice-captain.
Sri Lanka
Experience is what won Sri Lanka the game against Afghanistan. Lasith Malinga may be older and slower, but no one in the world can bowl better yorkers and deceptive slower ones crashing into the stumps like he does. After a successful IPL 2019 where he picked 16 wickets and won Mumbai the final, along with 3/49 against Afghanistan. Let’s not forget he is a World Cup hero, with 45+ World Cup wickets to his name.
Thisara Perera is a good vice-captain or even captain option for this game. He has been the unlikely leader since the start of 2018, being Sri Lanka’s highest wicket-taker as well as run scorer since then, so you can’t miss him in your MyFab11 (sign-up with code “READAD46“) fantasy team. With the ball, Suranga Lakmal was wayward while Nuwan Pradeep bowled with a lot of heart, with the latter having 11 wickets in 4 games since landing in England.
