So with England being the hosts and clearly the favourite team to go on and win the ICC 2019 World Cup, they begin every match with an advantage, regardless of whether they’re playing a mighty team like South Africa, who has won their last 6 ODIs coming into this game. However, it’s not the skill that counts today but more of the nerves as we approach Game 1 – the opening game – of the CWC 2019.
Hosts England play South Africa, with the latter having reached the semi-final in the 2015 World Cup where they lost to New Zealand in what became arguably the best match of the tournament. England’s batting order is one to watch out for, with everyone in the top 6 regularly capable of making 100+ scores in quick time. England
All I can say is that make sure you pick at least 4 of the top 6 English batsmen in your fantasy team, broken up as 3 batsmen and one wicket-keeper in Jonny Bairstow (depending on whether he is listed as batsman or wk). While Jos Buttler has been audaciously good, Bairstow bats at the top and has recently come off 445 runs in 10 games at IPL 2019. His opening partner Jason Roy has been in even better form with scores of 87, 76, 114, 32, 89* in his last 5 innings.
The next is Eoin Morgan who has a great record here while Joe Root has also done well here historically with 429 runs in 9 games here, including 3 fifties and a century. Liam Plunkett is a must have with 10 wickets in 7 games at this venue. After a torrid IPL 2019, Ben Stokes has continued a mediocre form and you can confidently drop him. With the ball, his wicket in the last warm-up game was his first in his last 7 professional games. Captain Morgan has been declared fit and set to play in the opener.
South Africa
Everyone was excited about Dale Steyn being back in the South African team but he was selected being only 50-60% fit, and he is likely to miss the opener. Chris Morris is someone likely to take his place. After a decent IPL 2019 where Morris picked 13 wickets in 9 games, he will be looking to make full use of his opportunity especially after being dropped from the initial South African World Cup squad.
With the bat, Hashim Amla was going through a terrible run with a best of 32 in 9 games for Cape Cobras but the two warm-up games did well for him, scoring 65 and 51* and looking his usual self. If we go on to pick Bairstow, Quinton de Kock might have to be sacrificed but the latter is also coming in with decent form, scoring 529 runs in IPL 2019. Rassie van der Dussen is a must-have in your Howzat (sign-up with code “READ1234”) fantasy team, someone who scored 4 fifties in just his first 8 ODIs.
