They call it the biggest party in sport. While the rest of the world sleeps, the Caribbean Premier League returns and once again, it’s set to be a big blockbuster as 34 T20s are scheduled between 4th September and 12th October 2019. The CPL 2019 scheduled is more relaxed as compared to past editions of the league. We begin with Match 1 – Trinbago Knights Riders vs St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.
The Knight Riders need no introduction. The same owners as the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, TKR is the defending champion, also having won the tournament 3 times in the last 4 years, making it CPL’s most successful franchise. Numbers
- Trinbago – topped CPL 2018 table with 7 wins in 10 games.
- St Kitts – 4th in CPL 2018 table with 5 wins in 10 games.
- Head to head in last 5 games, Trinbago leads 3-2.
- Colin Munro – 567 runs in 13 games in CPL 2018.
- 40*, 65, 43 – Evin Lewis in 3 ODIs against India last month.
Trinbago Knight Riders
Dwayne Bravo had 13 wickets in CPL 2018 but he has an injury which will keep him sidelined, meaning the Kieron Pollard has been named captain of the side. Pollard had a fifty and a score of 49 in 3 T20Is against India recently and is in striking form, plus he will throw himself the ball at times. The younger brother Darren Bravo is still out for a while, having not recovered from a recent concussion.
Similarly, last year’s top scorer of the tournament Colin Munro is out for the first three games of the tournament and Lendl Simmons is a replacement opener until then. Sunil Narine is expected to open alongside him. Narine picked only 8 wickets and scored 66 runs in 12 games in CPL 2018, so it’s not a huge gamble to leave him out. With 16 wickets in 12 games last year, USA’s Ali Khan is a danger weapon because of his swing bowling and he has to be in my fantasy team.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots
The side is set to be captained by Carlos Brathwaite, who did relatively well in CPL 2018 with 104 runs and 10 wickets. While his captaincy isn’t the best, pick him as he almost always ends among the wickets. Also with the ball, pick Sheldon Cottrell and expect many military style celebration in CPL 2019 as he has been on a wicket-taking spree since CWC 2019 and even before. He had 11 wickets in 9 games in CPL 2018.
With the bat, a lot depends on Evin Lewis and I can’t skip him from my Howzat (sign-up with code “READ1234”) fantasy team. He had a pathetic season last year with only 126 runs in the tournament but he’s coming off three good scores against India after a T20 series with only 10 runs in 3 games. Mohammad Hafeez is the most experienced player in the line-up which otherwise looks very bleak.
