The opening game of the highly popular 2019/20 Big Bash League saw Sydney Thunder registering a 29-run victory over Brisbane Heat and now, they’re set for their second challenge of the year, playing the defending champions Melbourne Renegades at Geelong, the latter playing their first game of the season. We expect yet another cracking contest today.
We have an idea of the Thunder team combination and we don’t expect them to tinker much with the winning team, while Renegades will be playing their first game of the season, so select your team carefully, preferably after seeing the toss. Stats
- Callum Ferguson – 3 fifties, 3 centuries since October 2019.
- Kane Richardson – 12 wickets in last 6 professional games.
Melbourne Renegades
With the ball, Kane Richardson topped the bowling charts in BBL 2018/19 with 24 wickets in just 14 games and he has been retained by the reigning champs and we expect him to be good this year too, recently playing a few T20Is for the national side as well. Another good bowling pick could be one of the overseas signings Harry Gurney who is one of the better T20 bowlers going around the world with plenty of variations in his armoury.
With 15 wickets and 254 runs in last season, Daniel Christian becomes another very important part of this side, and he could even be your fantasy team captain or vice-captain because of his all-round abilities. The side will be led by Aaron Finch while Zak Evans is out with an injury, and Alex Doolan comes in as his replacement. X-factor pick – Sam Harper, who was their top scorer in the last season.
Sydney Thunder
The Thunder captain Callum Ferguson has been in some brilliant form, also having 3 consecutive tons for South Australia last month and he scored 73* in the first game, having also amassed 442 runs in BBL 2018/19. Jay Lenton replaces leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha for this game, but I won’t be picking him. Alex Hales has been having a tough time in the last few months but 97* in his last game at MSL 2019 gives me confidence to pick him.
With the ball, I’ll have Chris Tremain in my Funtasy11 (sign-up with code “6CD431“) fantasy team even though he didn’t have a great season last year. He’s been among the wickets now and bowled 1/27 in his 4 overs in the last game. Their best all-rounder from last year was Daniel Sams who bagged a golden duck in the first game, but picked 2 wickets and he’s also a good captain/vice-captain pick.
