Probably second in terms of size and popularity among T20 leagues across the world, we’re set for the return of the Big Bash League which is Australia’s premier T20 competition which takes place each year around this time. The 2019/20 BBL season will take place between 17 Dec 2019 – 8 Feb 2020 and it promises another couple of months of exhilarating action!
It was an all-Melbourne affair in the final of BBL 2018/19 where the Renegades ended up emerging victorious in February this year. This season, we have Brisbane Heat playing in the opening fixture, having finished 5th on the points table last season. They play Sydney Thunder who finished 6th in that season. Stats
- Josh Lalor – 20 wickets in 11 games in BBL 2019/20.
- Chris Lynn last 6 professional scores – 16, 67, 23, 89, 61, 91*.
- Callum Ferguson – 442 runs in 14 games last season.
Brisbane Heat
Over the years, Chris Lynn has been the backbone of the Brisbane Heat batting, with their winning depending on the starts he gives them. Currently, he is leading the side and has 4 fifties in his last 6 games which were all played in the T10 format. I shudder to think what he can do with more overs. Replacing Baz at the top is England’s Tom Banton who also got 2 fifties in 5 games at the 2019 Abu Dhabi T10 League and these two are highly destructive.
With the ball, Josh Lalor had a fabulous season in only 11 games last year, and he has been retained by the squad once again. We can leave out leggier Mitchell Swepson as he ended BBL 2018/19 with only 9 wickets in 12 games. They replaced Mujeeb Rahman with another Afghani bowler, Zahir Khan and he’s certainly worth picking, recently having bagged 4 wickets in 4 games at the T10 League in Abu Dhabi.
Sydney Thunder
Last season, Thunder lacked a proper wicket-taker bowler and they might face the same issue in BBL 2019/20 as well. Chris Tremain only played 6 games last year while Chris Green managed only 8 wickets in 14 games, but I’ll pick Green because he has experience around the world and has improved with the bat too. Tanveer Sangha could be a surprise fantasy performer, with 6 wickets in his last 2 games for Aus U-19.
One player who was amazing last season was Daniel Sams with 15 wickets and 175 runs for the side in 14 games, and all-rounders always make my Funtasy11 (sign-up with code “6CD431“) fantasy teams in T20 cricket. The side is being captained by Callum Ferguson who is one of the most experienced players in the squad, while Alex Hales is one of the team’s overseas players, though he hasn’t been in the best form recently.
