It’s the Ashes all over again. England and Australia were among the first to play international cricket and the two have enjoyed a tooth and nail rivalry over the decades, with both enjoying success equally. However, in the last couple of years, England has dominated Australia in ODIs, with the most recent 5-0 drubbing in England last year. With the home advantage, England start as favourites once again.
Prior to this, England even beat Australia down under 4-1 and the dominance in ODIs has been going on since June 2017. However, with the return of their stalwarts and a recent 7-wicket win in a warm-up against Windies, Australia would fancy their chances here. England
I’m not sure how you can skip anyone from the England top order, as they’re all coming into the World Cup with amazing form. If anyone, Joe Root is the one to drop as he hasn’t had a score of lower than 35 in his last 5 innings. Jonny Bairstow has 192 runs in 2 games at this ground and just ended a marvellous IPL 2019 where he score 445 runs in 10 games. Jason Roy too has 4 fifties in 6 games here while also having 3 consecutive 75+ scores in ODIs.
Jos Buttler is coming into the World Cup with a destructive reputation and people are already looking at him being the game changer for England. However, I’m forced to leave him out because he bats too low down the order. Let’s not forget Eoin Morgan and James Vince are also in brilliant form of late. Liam Plunkett has 15 wickets in his last 7 professional games so he’s the first-choice bowler in my Fantain (Use Code “READ123”) fantasy team.
Australia
Steve Smith had a decent IPL 2019 with 319 runs scored but his Australia teammate David Warner had an amazing season that included 692 runs in 12 games. While Warner was motivated, Smith wasn’t his usual busy self and that’s why I’d drop Smith for Usman Khawaja instead, who comes into this cup with brilliant form and a couple of centuries against India.
However, do check the team after the toss as Khawaja took a blow to the head and retired hurt in the warm-up against West Indies. In that game, Smith and Shaun Marsh scored fifties while Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Coulter-Nile and Glenn Maxwell took 2 wickets each. Maxwell is a must-have in your team and you could even choose him as your captain. For a complete Australia team preview for the 2019 World Cup, click here.
