The first day of warm-up games at the 2019 ICC World Cup and both begin at the same timing of 3pm IST, with Game 1 being between Pakistan and Afghanistan. In Game 2, we see South Africa taking on Sri Lanka and clearly, the former is favourite to win because of squad strength. However, South Africa hasn’t played a game since landing here while Sri Lanka have played a couple against Scotland.
Sri Lanka is playing under a new captain and while the 1st ODI was washed out, the 2nd ODI saw all the experienced players failing against Scotland and that won’t help them in the World Cup. As for South Africa, a lot of their players have come off stints at IPL 2019 so they aren’t rusty. However, both teams have bad records here. Stats
- South Africa have won only 1 of their 5 previous ODIs here.
- Sri Lanka have won none of their 4 previous ODIs here.
- 300+ has been achieved here 10 times; 342/8 is the highest score (ENG vs AUS, 2018).
- Imran Tahir – 26 wickets in recent IPL 2019 (Purple Cap).
- Kagiso Rabada – 25 wickets in 12 games in recent IPL 2019.
South Africa
Quinton de Kock had a slow start to IPL 2019 but he found his groove, there was no stopping him, eventually scoring 529 runs in 16 games in that season. The wicket-keeper pick will be a tough one especially since Kusal Mendis also scored 66(56) in his last game but the latter is up against a formidable bowling attack here so I’ll go for QdK. The bowling attack consists of Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir, both of whom have been brilliant in recent times. Pick both.
Considering it’s more assistance to pace here, you could consider picking another SA pacer in place of Tahir, like Lungi Ngidi, who won’t be picked in as many fantasy teams. With the bat, one man who has been reliable is Faf du Plessis, so you can have him in your fantasy team. However, you can skip Hashim Amla, who managed a best score of just 32 in 9 games for Cape Cobras recently, including 4 single-digit scores. He has had a pathetic run of form.
Sri Lanka
Isuru Udana should be one of the first names on your fantasy team sheet today. He has been picking up an abundance of wickets in recent matches except the ODI series against South Africa, where he only managed 1 in 5 ODIs. However, Udana contributed with the bat in all 5 of those games including 2 fifties. Pick Lasith Malinga too as he had a good IPL 2019 – 16 wickets and winning MI the final against CSK off the last ball.
Thisara Perera only scored 63 runs and picked 1 wicket in that ODI series vs South Africa and scored a duck in the Scotland 2nd ODI. Ideally, he isn’t one you would pick but he’s always in the game due to his all-round abilities, so I won’t leave him out of my DuggOut (sign-up to get Rs.50 FREE) fantasy team for this SA vs SL warm-up game. Experience counts and I’ll also add Angelo Mathews to my team, who scored a century and a fifty in the recent Sri Lanka Provisional Cup.
