They cut the length of cricket matches from 5 days to 50 overs to 20 overs and the latest format now gripping the world is the shortest of them all, the T10 format. However, in a world of all these innovations and experiments, did you ever think you’d get to see a format like the 3TC one?! I for sure didn’t see that coming!
So just to clear it out for you, 3TC is nothing but 3-Team Cricket but don’t be confused, it’s not a tournament where 3 teams will participate. It’s a single match where three teams will participate! Confused? Well, it is an experiment and we’re beginning this new 3TC format with the 2020 Solidarity Cup, which was originally supposed to be played on 27 June but was pushed to 18 July 2020, due to coronavirus.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) is the first board to experiment with 3TCricket and we begin with the Solidarity Cup where 3 teams of 8 players each will play in a single game. The teams are KG’s Kingfishers (led by Kagiso Rabada), Quinny’s Kites (led by Quinton de Kock) and AB’s Eagles (led by AB de Villiers).

3TC format rules
So the game has been originally devised with 2 formats – one which will be a 36-overs game and the other which will be a 90-overs game. The match being played on 18 July will be played in the 36-over format of 3TCricket where every team will bat for 12 overs each. Now the catch is they will bat 6 overs to the first team and 6 overs to the second, and the rotation will keep happening until 36 overs are done.

Last man standing
With 8 players in each side, play can continue with the last man standing, with the exception being that this guy will have to score runs only in even numbers like 2, 4 or 6! If the team is bowled out in the first half itself, they forfeit all the deliveries in the second half, Every team is allowed one new ball which will be bowled for 12 overs and each bowler from these teams is allowed a maximum of 3 overs each.
How does one win?
Based on runs, of course! The winning team gets a gold medal, while the silver goes to the team scoring the next best number of runs and the bronze going out to the lowest scoring team on the day! Sounds fun, doesn’t it? You can signup to the 3TCricket website as well, and receive all updates from the tournament quicker than everyone else

Solidarity Cup 2020
The game will be played on Nelson Mandela Day and that’s a fantastic way to kick off this new and exciting format. 18 July is going to be a historic day in world cricket. All proceeds from the tournament will go towards The Hardship Fund, which will provide relief for those in the cricketing industry who have been affected by the pandemic.
Of course, social distancing will be maintained on the ground too, as the 8 players in the fielding team will have to be placed within the specified demarcations, which makes it even tougher to stop boundaries. See here:
