The European Cricket Network (ECN) got popular during the initial Covid-19 years after 2020 and till date, it remains a source of entertainment for cricket fans across the world. The level of the cricket being played here is not as high as we’re used to seeing in international cricket or other franchise T20 leagues.
A few days ago, we had another very funny fielding effort that went viral on social media. Donaustadt from Austria was taking on Independents CC from Guernsey in the European Cricket League 2024, Group F – Qualifier 2. The match was played on 14th March 2024 and the incident happened in the second innings of the game.
ECL – Funny fielding effort goes viral
Donaustadt batted first and scored 147/4 in their 10 overs and during the chase, one of their fielders fumbled up big time on the third man boundary. Initially, the ball was missed by the wicket-keeper and running down to the boundary for byes. However, the fielder tracked it down and stopped it with his boot, before acrobatically jumping over the boundary hoardings.
This happened in the first over itself and when he ran back from the other side of the hoardings, he messed things up badly. He ran across back into the field and instead of throwing it back to the wicket-keeper, he managed somehow to flick it back across the boundary rope. All of his athletic fielding went in vain, as the ball passed the boundary for four.

What followed was absolute mayhem as everyone burst out laughing. The commentators started laughing mid-sentence, when they were actually praising the fielding effort initially. The camera panned on to the players in the pavillion and they couldn’t control themselves from laughing either. Take a look at this viral piece of fielding here:

The commentators actually started singing on-air, imitating his silly piece of fielding while the replays showed on screen. The fielding however sunk to his knees and didn’t find the funny side of it at all.
Eventually, that misfield didn’t prove to be too costly as Donaustadt beat Independents CC by 14 runs in this important ECL qualifier game. However, the clip found its way to social media and WhatsApp groups across the world, and we’re sure the fielder won’t be too happy with that. The player was later identified as Ishak Safi, who took 1/18 in his 2 overs in the game.
