The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has organised several competitions in the country over the decades, across the First Class, List A, and T20 format. One of the most iconic domestic tournaments includes the Duleep Trophy, which was named after former Indian cricketer Duleepsinhji, and was first contested in the 1961-62 format.
The basic idea was to have different geographical zones participating in a First Class cricket competition, but there have been several format changes, and special invitee teams taking place over the years too. Sometimes, zonal teams participated while in 2002-03, the Ranji Trophy groups were replicated in this tournament. Between 2016-17 and 2019-20, BCCI also had teams called India Blue, India Red and India Green.
Duleep Trophy format
The first Duleep Trophy format followed saw 5 teams participating in a knockout format including a final. Ever since the Duleep Trophy 1993-94 edition, the competition moved to a league format. That changed back again to the knockout format in 2000-01, but only for three more seasons.

Between the 2003–04 and 2009-10 seasons, BCCI invited a sixth team to participate in the tournament, including England A being the first such invitation team, only for this format to be scrapped too. Coming to the most recent tournament – Duleep Trophy 2024 – the participating teams are India A, B, C, and D.
Here, the squads were picked by national selectors and the format followed is a round-robin with no knockout, with the table topper being declared as the winner See below for our complete Duleep Trophy winners list, last updated 15th September 2024, during the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 season in India:

The Duleep Trophy zonal format is the one that has been played the most over the years and hence, West Zone is the most successful team in this competition, with as many as 19 titles to their name. West Zone beat South Zone in the final of the inaugural tournament and South Zone is also the Duleep Trophy defending champions, beating West Zone in the 2023 Duleep Trophy final.
West Zone and North Zone have always dominated the competition and have the most entries in the Duleep Trophy winners list. In fact, it was only in Duleep Trophy 1971-72 (11th edition) that a team apart from these two won the tournament, with Central Zone emerging as winners. From the zonal teams, Central Zone is the least successful in Duleep Trophy history from those who’ve played in 15+ editions, with 6 titles under their belt.
