In the 2nd Test of the 2022 Australia tour of Sri Lanka, the home team emerged victorious thanks to multiple contributions with both bat and ball. Debutant Prabath Jayasuriya picked up 12 wickets in the game while Dinesh Chandimal ended up with his Test career best score of 206*, as Sri Lanka won by an innings and 39 runs and levelled the series 1-1.
Chandimal was the obvious talking point in the game for multiple reasons. Firstly, he smashed his highest international score in an innings that included 15 fours and 5 sixes. Secondly, he scored a 49-run partnership for the tenth wicket wherein the number #11 batsman stuck around as Chandimal scored vital runs, but he himself didn’t even score a single run.

Additionally, he even smashed one of the fastest bowlers in the world, Mitchell Starc, for two consecutive sixes at one point of time. The second six even got him to his double century, which shows he wasn’t really worried about the personal landmark but was furthering the cause for the team – a selfless effort indeed, given the match situation.
The game was taking place at the Galle International Stadium which has a road right outside the ground, and one of these maximums went right outside the ground and went on to hit a passerby. Luckily, it went on the bounce and the person walking by had his attention towards the ball that was rushing towards him.

The cameras followed the ball perfectly until when it hit the person, and the commentators were following it live too. They believed that the ball wasn’t coming back and that one of the boys from the group would’ve taken it home, but one of them flicked the ball right back towards where the play was in progress. Luckily, no one was injured.
At a time when most people are questioning Test cricket, we’ve seen some brilliant games including the recent few games in England where the home team took on New Zealand and then India. There have been results in all those games, and most of them went down to the wire too. See here for that six from Chandimal:

The game saw a clinical performance from the Sri Lankans as they put up 554 in their first innings, which means a 190-run lead over Australia. And just when we were thinking that Australia would wipe out the deficit and we’d be in for an enthralling Day 5 of the game, they were actually bowled out for just 151, giving Sri Lanka a win by an innings and 39 runs.
The win was mostly due to Jayasuriya so he was awarded the Player of the Match title but Chandimal’s form has been impeccable in recent games and he was presented with the player of the series award. The 32-year old has been great after finding his way back into the national side and we hope to see some more runs from his blade in coming weeks.
