In the last many years we’ve seen of international cricket, we’ve never seen anyone who has deserved a call up to the national side as much as this Kiwi left-handed batsman. We’re talking about the 29-year old Devon Conway who took a few years before making his first international appearance but he’s been impressing one and all ever since he first donned the Kiwi national jersey.
In 3 ODIs till date, he has a century, a fifty and a staggering batting average of 75! Similarly in 14 T20Is so far, Conway has managed great consistency that you usually don’t associate with that hard hitting format, scoring 4 fifties in his short T20I career so far. In his FC career too, a triple century and 18 FC tons headlines his record, and there’s no reason Conway wasn’t going to make a Test debut soon.
The 2021 New Zealand tour of England began today, 2nd June and Conway was given a well earned Test cap and it’s not even surprising that he went on to make everyone proud on debut itself. He had a few iffy moments right at the start of his innings, opening for New Zealand this morning. However, once he found his stance and rhythm, it was a free flowing innings worth watching.

The runs were coming quick and easy for him on Day 1 of the 1st Test and it was only in the 61st over of the 1st innings that Conway brought up a maiden Test century, becoming only the 12th Kiwi Test batsman to score a century on debut. What makes it better is the venue, as the game is being played at the Home of Cricket. Getting a hundred on debut at Lord’s – it doesn’t get better than that!
He ended up batting through all three sessions on the first day, steadily guiding New Zealand to 246/3 (86) at Stumps on Day 1. With 16 boundaries to his name, he ended the day’s play at 136(240)* and he’s going to wake up a happy man tomorrow. And he still gets to bat on and get a big hundred, maybe even a double century.
