The cricketing industry today mourns the loss of one of their most loved members. We’re talking about Dean Jones, someone who scored 9,000+ runs at the international level for Australia before turning commentator and well, he did everything to promote the game of cricket across the world.
Currently, he was working for Star Sports where he was a daily feature in the Select Dugout, the studio of which is in Lower Parel, Mumbai, where the Star Sports offices are. Earlier today, breaking news came through of Professor Deano passing away, due to a massive heart attack and this news came out of nowhere, proving to be a huge shock to everyone involved in IPL 2020 and the rest of the cricketing world.
This news came out just a few hours before Match 6 began between Punjab and Bangalore, and both teams sported black armbands as a tribute to Deano. He has always been a great ambassador of the game and has often worked in countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan and more to support the game. The Select Dugout even saw an empty chair being left honour of Deano, with a colorful coat hanging off the chair.

Prof Deano played 164 ODIs and 52 Tests at the highest level before, where he scored 11 centuries, being an important part of Allan Border’s team during their glory years. Through IPL 2020 Match 6, Scott Styris and Graeme Swann kept repeating anecdotes of Deano’s history and ended them all with ‘Thank you, Deano’. In fact, it only took a few minutes for cricketers across the world to roll out tributes on Twitter:
Dean Jones: 1961-2020 – an icon of the game gone way too soon. RIP

Absolutely heartbreaking news about Dean Jones passing away.
A wonderful soul taken away too soon. Had the opportunity to play against him during my first tour of Australia.
May his soul rest in peace and my condolences to his loved ones. 🙏🏼 pic.twitter.com/u6oEY1h7zz— Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) September 24, 2020

In complete shock to hear about Dean Jones sad passing. One of a kind you were Deano and how lonely and helpless you must have felt on your own in that hotel room-a death we commentators fear the most, and likely to meet, helpless and gone in that hotel room…RIP my friend.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Mr. Dean Mervyn Jones AM. He died of a sudden cardiac arrest. We express our deep condolences to his family and stand ready to support them in this difficult time. We are in touch with the Australian High Commission to make the necessary arrangements,” said Star Sports in an official statement.
During the game, we even saw Scott Styris breaking down on live TV and that was so understandable. These guys spend 12-16 hours a day together. Go to work, commentary, IPL parties, wake up and repeat the next day. And for them to lose a member of the Dugout is to lose someone as good as a family member. Scotty Styris for sure felt it while talking about his mate Deano:
Hard to watch @Swannyg66 and #ScottStyris in #SelectDugout today commentating and leaving a seat in memory of @ProfDeano @StarSportsIndia #RIPDeanJones 💔
