Not usually known as a Test cricketer, Daryl Mitchell has currently been having the time of his life. It’s not even been 12-18 months since the Kiwi all-rounder has started becoming a regular feature in the New Zealand national side across formats. And knowing his game, not many would’ve expected success for him in the longest form of the sport.
But he’s been proving everyone wrong as he’s got two consecutive centuries in the ongoing 2022 England vs New Zealand Test series. After a small century in the 1st Test, Mitchell scored a career-best 190 which was his third century in this format, in just his 11th Test altogether. He has a batting average of 54+ but today, we’re here to talk about another achievement in this same 2nd Test match.
Daryl Mitchell catch vs England – 2nd Test
After dropping a super easy catch earlier in this game he pulled off a thrilling one-handed slip catch late in the 1st innings of England. They came out to bat today on Day 4 and sniffing a small chance of victory, they were scoring some quick runs in the first session of the day. And during the run of play, they managed to lose a couple of quick wickets too, one of them being former captain Joe Root who went for 174.
As England zoomed past 500 and the deficit was narrowing, it was Stuart Broad who came out at number #8 and hit a couple of quick boundaries. Then, he was up against off-spinner Michael Bracewell and we knew Broad would want to go after him. After a boundary in the over already, he tries to heave Bracewell down the ground but only managed to get a outside edge to Mitchell, who was ready as ever!

Mitchell was stationed at first slip and he took a diving one-handed catch to his right, even though he was slightly blinded by the wicket-keeper standing in front of him. Broad swung hard and the ball was obviously travelling at a little bit of speed. But Mitchell took it and made up for the earlier drop in this game. What’s worse is that England lost their commanding position with 7 down with the deficit still pending.
It’s safe to say that Mitchell is someone who is going to be a part of this New Zealand squad for a few years to come and he’s put the position of someone like a Colin de Grandhomme very much in jeopardy, especially in the test format. With both teams having results in the first session, there seems to be an exciting last 5 sessions pending in this game!
