What fabulous scenes we have witnessed at the Dharamshala Stadium in India today. It was a great India vs New Zealand clash with both teams unbeaten before today, and everyone was going gaga over the sights up in the mountains from this stadium. However, the picturesque stadium turned troublesome in the second innings.
As the sun went down, there was a haze across the stadium, which was getting lower and lower as the Indian chase went on. The fog was thick and visibility decreased for the players, which caused a couple of disruptions in play. Finally, the players had to walk off the field in the 16th over, when India was cruising at a score of 100/2 in 15.4 overs.
Dharamshala fog stops play
The commentators on air confirmed that the delay due to fog will follow the same rules as followed when there are rain disruptions and the Duckworth Lewis method has to be used. It’s not too often that you get to see play stopped due to fog but that was the situation today, though the fog was briskly moving away as well. ‘Inclement weather’ was another term used to describe the stoppage in play due to the Dharamshala fog.

While some called in haze, others called it mist, and others called it a fog. But either way, it was something we don’t get to see daily, and the commentators confirmed it would be one hour before overs would start getting deducted. It was also confirmed that the D/L par score in 20 overs was 94/2 and India was ahead at the time of the fog interruption at Dharamshala, though the minimum overs were not played yet.

Users on X (formerly Twitter) went into a frenzy talking about what was happening in Dharamshala. Others however, were busy making jokes on the fog, comparing it to an Indian advertisement for a perfume called ‘Fogg’. Others still posted real-time videos from the stadium, which made it even better to get a stadium point of view of this situation.

Eventually though, the players were off the field for less than 10 minutes and play resumed in no time. There will be questions asked about future day/night matches in Dharamshala, especially towards the end of the year as winter starts setting in. Additionally, the outfield wasn’t too great, which meant none of the players were ready to dive to save runs in the field, fearing injuries.
Either way, play resumed after this rare sight in cricket and India are on course to getting 5 in 5 wins in the CWC 2023 league stage, with Shreyas Iyer and former captain Virat Kohli out at the crease when play resumed.
