Yesterday was a historic day for the cricketing industry, with England playing West Indies at home, a game of cricket kicking off after a long break of 117 days. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there’s been a massive shortage of cricketing action but the draught ended yesterday as the two teams began with the 1st Test at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.
England began as huge favourites for this game and of course for the series but it was a terrible batting effort by them. Or, we can call it a good bowling effort by the visitors in the 1st innings of the game. After getting just about 17 overs of play on the first day, Day 2 was an exciting one with a flurry of wickets, some counter-attacking, and some more wickets after that again.
It was Shannon Gabriel who began the wicket-taking for the West Indians, picking all of the first 3 wickets to fall. However, it was all the Jason Holder show after that. It was a brilliant return to cricket for Windies as they bowled out England for just 204 runs and it was an even better personal return for captain Holder, who ended with career-best Test figures.
England is fielding an inexperienced batting lineup and that was very evident as none other than Rory Burns, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes managed to get off to decent scores. Having the experience of 40 Tests prior to this one, Jason Holder wasn’t going to miss this opportunity to add to his list of wickets, beating his previous best figures of 6/59!

There were concerns about Jason Holder and whether he would play in this game but the team will be glad he played as he ended with Test best figures of 6/42, proving yet again how he is one of the best all-rounders in the longest format of the game of cricket. Towards the end of the innings today, Holder took himself out of the attack and let Gabriel get his 4th scalp of the game, getting James Anderson clean bowled!
