Today was a day to remember in the West Indies as it marked the final of the 2021 Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Possibly the biggest party in sport, the Hero CPL has always provided maximum entertainment to sports and cricket fans, and today’s CPL 2021 final was no different, as it was the day of the saints – St Lucia Kings vs St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.
When Trinbago Knights Riders was knocked out by St Lucia in the final, we knew one thing for sure and that was the fact that a new champion would be crowned in the Hero CPL, because none of the surviving three teams had won the CPL title in the past. And it was St Kitts that won the second semi final to set up a final’s berth against St Lucia today on 15th September 2021.
Apart from just being a final, it was a momentous occasion for St Kitts captain Dwayne Bravo as he took the field for a record 500th time in his T20 career. And we say record because this franchise cricket expert is only the second cricketer in the world to reach 500 T20 games, after his countryman Kieron Pollard. Bravo was felicitated before the game too, showing tribute to him regardless of the game’s outcome.
The result ended up going his way as well eventually. St Kitts were to chase 160 in order to win the Hero CPL 2021 final and they nearly faltered in the chase, with their openers going within the powerplay and captain DJ Bravo not contributing much to the scoreboard either, being dismissed for 8(11) and leaving his side reeling at 95/5 in the 14th over.
From there, Fabian Allen and Dominic Drakes put up a good fight and eventually, it was Drakes who went to to pull off a thrilling victory, scoring a T20 best of 48(24)* as St Kitts ended up winning this contest on the final ball, and winning the CPL 9 final. St Kitts & Nevis Patriots have been crowned the new Hero CPL champions!
