Chennai Super Kings fans probably went wild last night as they went on to win their fourth ever Indian Premier League title, beating Kolkata Knight Riders in the final. They may be termed as the ‘Dad’s Army’ but they’ve proved their worth time and time again, getting their first title after winning it in IPL 2018 as well.
A major part of their success was Faf du Plessis who scored 633 runs in the IPL 2021 tournament, which included 6 fifties at an average of 45+ and a strike rate of 138+. He played well right through the tournament and clearly saved the best for last, putting in a match-winning performance of 86(59) in the IPL 2021 final, finishing just 2 runs short of Ruturaj Gaikwad who won the Orange Cap.
Now Faf was one of three South Africans in the CSK squad for this tournament, apart from Lungi Ngidi and Imran Tahir. Faf had the biggest contributions from the three because the other two didn’t get much game time itself. However, Cricket South Africa (CSA) clearly wasn’t keeping a track on du Plessis’ contributions, as they put out a congratulatory post only for Lungi Ngidi.

The post after the IPL 2021 final saw an image of the CSK winning team with the trophy and a caption that read “Congratulations @lungingidi on claiming the IPL 2021 title with Chennai Super Kings.” Obviously, there have been rifts within the management which is part of the reason that Faf isn’t even in the 2021 T20 World Cup squad, but this post wasn’t going unnoticed.
Fans from across the world commented and let them know how poor a post this was and how it was done in very bad taste, against two of their loyal servants over the years. Faf himself commented “Really?” on the post while former pacer Dale Steyn decided to list out achievements of Faf and Imran Tahir for South Africa, also asking who was running thes social media pages.
Eventually, the post was pulled down and something new was uploaded with caption, “Congratulations to all the South Africans who competed in and claimed victory in the 2021 IPL Final with Chennai Super Kings. Notably Faf du Plessis who put in a Man of the match performance.”
