While everyone’s always going gaga over the men’s Ashes tournament, let’s not forget that the Women’s Ashes has also been around for decades, and has an equal amount of significance in the cricketing rivalry between these two teams. And unlike most other women’s cricket tournaments, this one didn’t begin recently but dates all the way back to the first Women’s Ashes series in 1934-35.
Heralded in 1931, this was not just the first women’s Test series between England and Australia, but was also the first ever women’s series anywhere in the world. From then until 2013, the Women’s Ashes result was decided based on the outcome of the Test match(es) but after 2013, it’s a points system based on the results of both the Test(s) as well as the limited overs games..
Historic Women’s Ashes winners
That first series in 1934-35 was an England Women’s tour of Australia and New Zealand, where they beat Australia 2-1 in a 3-match series and then beat New Zealand in a one-off Test as well, captained by Betty Archdale. A total of 24 Women’s Ashes series have been contested since then, with the 25th one being the 2023 Women’s Ashes taking place in England once again.
