All-Rounder Chris Morris Retires From all Forms of Cricket

A few years ago, this guy was one of the most expensive picks at an Indian Premier League (IPL) auction and was also a vital part of the national side going into a major world tournament. He’s got speed, he’s got the big hits and he’s good in the field but all these descriptions can now be done in the past tense as leading South African all-rounder Chris Morris has announced his retirement from cricket.

It was a shocking decision but when you look at it, the Chris Morris retirement decision shouldn’t be such a surprise. He’s not 34 years old, has spent most of his last couple of years nursing various injuries and last played for the national side back in 2019. With only one wicket in his last 5 games across formats, he hasn’t been in great form either.

He made his T20I debut in December 2021 and since then, he’s been one of the leading all-rounders in international and franchise league cricket. Over the years, he played 4 Tests, 42 ODIs and 23 T20Is for the national side and apart from all the wickets he picked up, he also had a fifty in each format at the highest level.

In the IPL, he last played for Rajasthan Royals and with the IPL 2022 mega auction just a month away, he would’ve been one of the hot deals for the 10 IPL franchises but this retirement has taken everyone by storm. He’s announced his retirement not just from international cricket but from all forms of the game, effective immediately.

Morris took to social media to announce his retirement from cricket earlier today and interestingly, it was with a photo in his domestic side jersey, Titans. His caption read, “Today I announce my retirement from all forms of cricket! Thanks to all who have played a part in my journey whether it be big or small…it’s been a fun ride! Delighted to be taking up a coaching role at @titanscricket #lifebeginsnow 💙”

Several top South African as well as other national side cricketers were quick to comment on his post on social media, where he has 320k+ followers on Instagram and 130k+ on Twitter. He got 94 wickets in 69 appearances at the highest level and it was safe to say that his international career was over either way. He posted his retirement with a hashtag, #LifeBeginsNow.

One of the biggest achievements of his career will always be the IPL 2021 auction where he was bagged by Rajasthan Royals for a world record 16.25 Crore contract. He also ended the 2019 ICC World Cup as the leading wicket-taker for South Africa but unfortunately, he never featured in the national jersey after that. We know quite a few fans who are going to miss watching him in action!
