We all love the Lanka Premier League (LPL) because there’s some amazing talent on display at all times on the island nation. However, sometimes there could be freak accidents like the one we saw yesterday, which will make you clench your teeth or worse. A similar scary incident took place during an LPL 2022 game at Hambantota yesterday, 7th December 2022.
A game was scheduled of Galle Gladiators vs Kandy Falcons and it was the second game of the day’s double header. Here, we saw a brilliant effort from Sri Lankan national player Chamika Karunaratne, where he had to run backwards to complete a catch in the outfield, but in the process, we ended up with four less teeth in his mouth.
LPL 2022: Chamika Karunaratne loses teeth while fielding
Galle Gladiators batted first on the day and they put up 121/8 in their 20 overs, thus leaving it to be an easy chase for the Falcons. However during that 1st innings of Galle, Karunaratne was involved in this unfortunate incident while taking a catch in the field. Nuwanidu Fernando was the batsman on strike and it was Carlos Brathwaite who was bowling to him at the time, when he skied one up on the off-side.
Three fielders were converging around the ball and it was Karunaratne who called for it and decided to complete the catch, running backwards. The ball hit him on the face initially, completing missing out on judging the ball, and that impact saw him lose a few teeth immediately, with some reports saying 3 while others saying 4 teeth were lost while taking the catch.

The ball rebounded off his mouth and rolled on to his shoulders, before he managed to catch it from his chest. While his teammates were thrilled with the catch, they didn’t realise that Karunaratne was struggling until they saw him clutching his mouth. Upon releasing his hand from his mouth, it was revealed to everyone that his mouth was bleeding as well.
Slow motion replays clearly showed a tooth or two falling out of his mouth upon impact and that was the end of the game for the national side player. He was taken off to hospital where it was later confirmed that he had to undergo dental surgery for the damage done because of this freak incident. Luckily for his side, they managed to do justice to his efforts by securing a 5-wicket victory. See the video here:

Carlos Brathwaite was the hero of the day with the ball for the Falcons, picking up this wicket of Fernando as well as three others, ending with figures of 4/14 in his 4 overs. With that, Kandy Falcons moved to the top of the LPL 2022 points table with 2 wins from their 2 games, and we expect them to keep up the streak in games to come this season.
