You have to be good in order to play 200+ First Class games, whichever part of the world you’ve played it from. Having burst onto the scene as a 19-year old, he grew into a fine batsman, capable of taking on any top bowler in world cricket. He’s known for his time spent at Hampshire but domestically, he also spent some time playing for Kent, Leicestershire, and Surrey.
If you didn’t already guess who we’re talking about, it’s former English cricketer Michael Carberry, whose career will be remembered for multiple reasons. He fought against racism, favouritism, politics, and more importantly, he fought against personal issues including life-threatening diseases like clots on his lungs, stomach cancer and much more.
Today 39 years old and happily retired, Carberry enjoyed 6 Tests and 6 ODIs at the highest level but he had talent and potential that should’ve seen him playing at least 150 ODIs, if not more. Naturally an attacking batsman, he first made his debut for England at 34 years of age and was known more for his records at the domestic level which includes:
- 6 hundreds in 173 List A games
- 35 hundreds in 208 FC games
- 13,868 total career FC runs
Dwayne Fernandes from Read Scoops recently caught up with the cricketer and spoke to him about his cricketing career and the various struggles he had to battle against through that career. We spoke about post-retirement life and also about his plans going forward – both cricket as well as non-cricket plans.
