When cricket is played at the highest level, supporting teams also display the highest levels of quality too. However, that’s not what we saw in today’s coverage of the New Zealand vs South Africa 1st Test. Taking place at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, today was Day 2 of the first game of the series and we noticed a few errors on the part of the broadcasters during the course of the day.
New Zealand were bowled out for 511 and when the visitors came out to bat, Raynard van Tonder walked out at number #3, after the dismissal of his captain, Neil Brand. However, there was a clear spelling error when his First Class stats were being displayed on screen. On Test debut, the broadcast team decided to rename him to ‘Raymond van Tonder’.
Raymond or Raynard van Tonder?
Initially, we thought that his name is probably right but after multiple checks, we realised that this was a clear error. In fact, the broadcast team must’ve also quickly realised they’ve messed up because they rectified the name when they had to show Tonder’s score after he was dismissed, which was less than a couple of minutes later. He was out for 0(2) and this time, his name appeared right.

They didn’t have too much time to rectify their error because van Tonder’s debut innings came to an end real soon, getting out for a duck on just his second delivery, caught plumb in front of the stumps against the bowling of Kyle Jamieson, who struck twice in an overs to reduce the visitors to 26/2. The 25-year old wouldn’t have been happy with this result.

And as we did a little deeper searching, it turns out that this wasn’t even the biggest or first mistake from the broadcast team during the game. Yesterday on Day 1 of the Test while presenting the team names, they messed up images of the South African cricketers with their New Zealand counterparts, like putting Kane Williamson’s image to van Tonder’s name.

Similarly, the image for Ruan de Swardt was that of Glenn Phillips, and these were players batting at the exact same positions for their respective teams. It’s clear that the broadcast team needs to buck up because millions of people are watching from across the world, and this isn’t a sign of great professionalism from New Zealand Cricket.
