Super Sundays in the Big Bash League are always fun because there’s a whole lot of action-packed cricket taking place. Today too, we had two games on the BBL 12 schedule and the second one of the day was Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Renegades. The game began with a smashing record powerplay score for the Scorchers, before the Renegades bowlers started to pull things back.
However, it wasn’t only the bowlers who did their job to pull the momentum back, but also the fielders. One fine fielding moment took place in the 17th over of the Scorchers innings, which was also the first over of the power surge. On strike was Nick Hobson and the left-handed batter lofted the ball in an attempt to clear mid-off, but he was met by a flying one-handed catch by a Renegades fielder.
BBL 12 – Will Sutherland catch vs Scorchers
Captain Aaron Finch was on the mic during the time and he was busy setting his field. When the ball went up, he called that his fielder would take the catch and right enough, Will Sutherland pulled off a blinder. He misjudged it initially and started to back-track, putting out a single hand and managing to hold on even after tumbling backwards.
While he made the error in judgment initially, he recovered brilliantly and it ended up looking like a super athletic catch from Sutherland. Earlier on the mic, we hear captain Finch calling him ‘Chief’ and we now have no doubts as to why he’s the chief. He made up for a very mediocre performance with the ball in this game, getting 0/46 in his 4 overs bowled.

He had an added responsibility to do well with the ball in this game because it was only the second over of the game today when their bowler David Moody was suspended from bowling after delivering two waist-high no balls and basically, just a single legal delivery before being taken off. So, Sutherland couldn’t contribute with the ball but he surely did in the field today.
And despite his theatricals in the field, Renagades still ended the innings poorly and ended up conceding 212/5 in their 20 overs. They’re lucky they got regular wickets in the middle overs or else they could’ve ended up conceding 230+ as well. Cameron Bancroft top scored with 95(50)*, carrying his bat through the innings.
