While all of us are resting and enjoying our Sunday, it wasn’t the best week off for Sri Lanka batsman Kusal Mendis. Mendis was driving his car earlier this morning and is said to have crashed into a cyclist which caused the latter’s death instantly. The 25-year old top order batsman has been arrested and investigation for the same is currently underway.
This doesn’t come as great news for the Mendis family or for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) either as Mendis is tipped to be the next best batsman in the country. He was only 20 years old when he made his Test debut for Sri Lanka and since that day in 2015, he’s gone on to play 44 Tests, 76 ODIs and 26 T20Is for the country, with a test best score of 196, and 9 international centuries in all.
It is said that Mendis was driving his SUV before dawn on Sunday morning and crashed into a cyclist, who passed away on the spot, and this happened at Panadura, just outside the country capital, Colombo. Way back in 2003, spinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi was involved in a road accident where a pedestrian was killed and for that, he received a 4-year jail sentence.

As per reports, the 64-year old cyclist received serious injuries and died on his way to the hospital. With the lockdown having eased off in the country, Mendis was part of Sri Lanka’s residential training camp which ended on Wednesday, being hosted in Pallekele. This accident is reported to have happened at around 5am this morning.
Currently investigations are underway and we believe that Mendis will appear before the Panadura magistrate within the next day or two for further action that has to be taken. As of now, there is no reports to say whether either Mendis or the cyclist were under the influence of alcohol or any other substance.
