After a lot of controversies, security issues and player issues, Australia finally decided to tour Bangladesh for 2 test matches between 27th August and 8th September 2017. We at Read Scoops are writing this to tell you that even though Australia are ranked #4 on the ICC Test Rankings compared to Bangladesh’s #9, the hosts are well and truly ahead in the 1st test match.
On Day 1, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first but all their plans were rocked early on as Pat Cummins struck thrice within his first two overs, leaving Bangladesh reeling at 10/3. What followed was a beautifully structured partnership of 155 between Shakib al Hasan(84) & Tamim Iqbal(71).
Even though both missed out on centuries, they managed to get Bangladesh up to a 1st innings score of 260, which is well above par on a turning Dhaka pitch. It was Australia’s turn to face the music and they didn’t do too well either, being reduced to 18/3 at stumps on Day 1.
The Bangladeshi spinners kept getting Aussie wickets at regular intervals and eventually bowled out Australia for 217. Shakib al Hasan picked up a 5-for and became only the fourth bowler after Muralitharan, Steyn & Herath to pick 5-wicket hauls against all 9 other test-playing nations.
Not a single wicket went to a Bangladeshi pacer and that story won’t change in the 2nd innings. The hosts picked up a crucial 43-run lead in the 1st innings and if they continue the good work over the next day or two, we may well see Bangladesh beating Australia for the first time ever in their test history.
Yes, Bangladesh and Australia have played in 4 prior test matches and the latter have won all four, very convincingly each time. The hosts lost a wicket in the penultimate over, and went into stumps on Day 2 with 45/1 on the board, and a lead of 88 runs.
