It’s not the most popular franchise league in the world but the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is the highest professional T20 franchise tournament in Bangladesh, one which has started to grow bigger with every season in recent years. They’ve been attracting a lot of sponsorship deals and the most popular players in world cricket, in recent BPL T20 seasons.
The tournament inaugurated with the BPL 2012 season and currently has a 7-team format being followed which includes a double round robin and the playoffs being contested. While they’ve changed their name and owners over the years in the BPL T20, the Dhaka and Comilla franchises happen to be the most successful teams in BPL history, having taken down the title on three (3) occasions each.
The Dhaka franchise has won BPL as Dhaka Gladiators twice (the first two seasons of the league), while they won later under the name of Dhaka Dynamites. They later changed their name to Dhaka Dominators. Till date, all the eight editions of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) have been played in Bangladesh itself, with all the BPL finals taking place in the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur.

Talking about the most consistent teams in the BPL T20 history, the Dhaka franchise pops up here again, with three titles and two runner-up finishes to their name in eight seasons so far. Close behind their record of 5 finals appearance is the Comilla Victorians who have made the BPL final on three different occasions, winning all three, including the last one in BPL 2022.

In terms of individual records, all of the top run scorers in the league over the years have been local Bangladeshi batsmen, with Tamim Iqbal leading the run scorers’ charts and Mushfiqur Rahim being a close second. And with the ball, the situation is the same in terms of local players taking the top spots but there’s a big gap between the first and the rest, with Shakib Al Hasan leading this list.
When it comes to performing in BPL finals over the years, the international players tend to step up with the likes of Imran Nazir, Kumar Sangakkara, Chris Gaye, Andre Russell, and Sunil Narine receiving the MOM awards in BPL finals over time. Till date, no player has won the MOM award in two different finals as yet, but we’re sure that’s a record capable of changing in the BPL T20 seasons to come.
