It’s been 17 unbeaten Tests and 8 consecutive winning series at home for New Zealand but finally, someone has put an end to their unbeaten record at home. And no, it’s not Australia or England or India or Pakistan, but it’s the young Test side from Bangladesh that brought them down to their knees, winning the 1st Test at Mount Maunganui by a whopping 8 wickets.
If you looked at the scorecard on Day 1 of the Test, you’d know the hosts were way ahead and after putting up 328 in their 1st innings, not many expected Bangladesh to come out and bat 176 overs, putting up 458 on the board which included a 1st innings lead of 130 runs. And it’s that stubborn batting and lead that gave them the edge in this game, creating history this morning on Day 5.

Read the above line again, because it’s the first time such an occurrence has happened. Never before has Bangladesh beaten the hosts in any format in their home venue. Bangladesh has often been known as the team that can only win on spinning pitches in home conditions but once again, they’ve proved everyone wrong by winning in totally alien conditions, and winning handsomely too!
The 2022 Bangladesh tour of New Zealand only consists of 2 Test matches and the hosts could very easily come back and draw the series but this win will live in the visitors’ memories for a very long time indeed. Even in the 2nd innings, they showed a lot of character to turn the game on its head when Ross Taylor and Will Young were batting comfortably and the game seemed headed straight for a draw!

It was Ebadot Hossain who was awarded the Man of the Match though he got only 1 wicket in the 1st innings. It was him who struck three blows back to back before the close of play on Day 4, ending with 6/46 and putting them in the driver’s seat. And let’s not forget the contributions of the batters, with four of them striking half centuries in the 1st innings to put up a commanding score on the board.

New Zealand are Test Champions and if we beat them then it will inspire the next generation to do the same,” said Ebadot after being awarded the player of the match. He’s someone who made a switch in careers, from volleyball to cricket; how inspiring!
