We recently had the 2022 Sri Lanka tour of Bangladesh where two Test matches were played out and after a draw in the 1st Test, the two teams played the 2nd Test in Dhaka which went down to the final day of the game. Bangladesh was in a poor position at the end of Day 4 but they were in the process of completing a revival when two of their top batsmen scored fifties in the 2nd innings.
We’re talking about Liton Das and Shakib al Hasan who were helping the hosts recover well in the 2nd innings with fifties each, until we saw a magnificent return catch from one of the Sri Lankan bowlers. Given the situation of the game, the catch turned out to be very pivotal as it broke the partnership and helped the visitors take a hold of the game as well.
Asitha Fernando takes stunning catch
The fifth ball of the 48th over of the game saw Fernando running in to bowl to Das who struck the ball slightly in the air back towards the direction of the bowler. Moving right naturally in his follow through, Fernando did really well to move to his left and even move downwards to complete the most amazing return catch.
It was a simple press forward from Liton who would’ve expected the ball to go down the ground and get a couple of runs. However, he wouldn’t have expected the screamer from Fernando who completed the catch while Bangladesh had a lead of only 15 runs, effectively reducing them to 15/6 in the 2nd innings after the batter was sent back for a well made 52(135).

Had these two continued their merry way, things could’ve been different for the hosts. They would’ve piled on the runs and had a great chance of saving the Test once again. However, this catch turned out to be a match-winning one as Bangladesh were soon bundled out, with Fernando getting the wicket of Shakib a couple of overs later as well.
Fernando lifted the spirits of the Sri Lankan players and after Das’ wicket, they only managed to add 13 runs for the last 4 wickets as the momentum changed sides. Eventually, they were bowled out with a lead of just 28 runs and it didn’t take much for the visitors to come out and wrap up the game real soon, completing a 10-wicket victory and a series victory as well.

Asitha Fernando was awarded the player of the match for his 10-fer in the game while Angelo Mathews was awarded the player of the series because of two big centuries in each game, including 199 in the 1st Test.
