While everyone usually focusses only on T20 franchise leagues in today’s day and age, let’s not forget that there’s still nothing bigger than international tournament. And the International Cricket Council (ICC) ensures that these national events are not forgetting in the hope of commercialising cricket. Today, we’re going to talk about the 2022 Asia Cup.
As the name suggests, the tournament is played among Asia countries and it has a very rich history as well, being played in both the ODI as well as the T20I format. Ever since the first edition way back in 1984, a total of fourteen Asia Cup tournaments have been played so far, with thirteen of them being played in the 50-over standard format and only one (Asia Cup 2016) being played in the T20 format.
Asia Cup 2022 Dates
The 2022 Asia Cup is now announced with the last ever edition of this tournament taking place back in 2018. A tight game ended with India beating Bangladesh in the final and recording a 3-wicket victory. They recorded their seventh Asia Cup victory and no other team has been as successful as India when it comes to the Asia Cup.
Now, the Asia Cup 2022 dates are out and it has been confirmed that this tournament will also be played in the T20I format – the second time this is happening. The tournament will be played in Sri Lanka and the dates for the T20-style Asia Cup 2022 are 27 Aug – 11 Sep 2022. While the main tournament dates are out, the Asia Cup T20 2022 qualifiers are also scheduled from 22 August.
While the five test playing sides are automatic qualifiers (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan), one of UAE, Kuwait, Singapore and Hong Kong will qualify to the main tournament. The first two qualified from the 2020 ACC Western Region T20 while the other two from the 2020 ACC Eestern Region T20.
Asia Cup 2022 Schedule
The Asia Cup is meant to be played at an interval of two years each but because of Covid-19 restrictions, the 2020 Asia Cup was cancelled and postponed. The next plan proposed by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was to have the tournament in June 2021 but Covid-19 put a spoke in the wheel once again. Now, we’re finally set to make this happen!
While the dates are announced, we’re still unaware of the schedule and the format of the Asia Cup 2022. We’re only aware of the T20 format and that the dates will be Aug-Sep this year. This is updated on 19th March 2022 and as soon as we have more relevant information on the squads, schedule and other details on Asia Cup 2022, we’ll update this page accordingly.
