Recently, the world of cricket was surprised and shocked with the entire sexting scandal that former Test captain Tim Paine was involved in. In fact, it only got worse for the entire Australian cricket team in the week to come as Paine decided to take the big step of stepping down as captain and then even making himself unavailable for the big Ashes 2021/22 series which is taking place down under, starting 8th Dec 2021.
What that did is it left open a vacancy for a new Test captain which was filled by pacer Pat Cummins and also a vacancy for the wicket-keeper slot. While there were a few options, it was later confirmed that Alex Carey will be picked and he will indeed make his Test debut at The Gabba where the 1st Test will be played against England.

Carey is someone who has been around the national team setup for white ball cricket since a while now, and it’s the first time he’s going to get a chance to prove himself in the longest format. While it’s a well-deserved opportunity, he’s up against a quality English bowling lineup and it will be challenging. Furthermore, his BBL team will miss him in the BBL 11 season that starts on 5th Dec 2021.
He’s got 45 caps in ODIs and 38 caps in T20Is and 3 years after making his international debut, he’s set to make his Test debut, while also becoming the 461st player to represent Australia in Test cricket. “I am incredibly humbled by this opportunity. It’s an exciting build-up for what is a huge series ahead. My focus is on preparing and playing my part in helping Australia secure the Ashes,” said Carey.
