You know you’re a special player if you can make the big contributions when the stakes are high. We call them big match players and one such player emerged in the ongoing Karnataka vs Saurashtra semi final game of the 2022/23 Ranji Trophy in India. Karnataka batted first and scored 407 but the Saurashtra reply was led by middle order batsman, Arpit Vasavada.
Initially, it was 36-year old Sheldon Jackson who steadied the ship at the top with 160 runs under his belt. He scored a 232-run partnership with Vasavada but the latter decided to keep going and was batting even as wickets fell on the other end. The southpaw finally managed to overtake Jackson’s score, putting on runs as he batted with the Saurashtra tail-enders.

The 34-year old decided to accelerate after the eighth wicket fell and he managed to get to this very special milestone a few overs later. The Saurashtra captain had a best First Class score of 205 prior to this game and here, he got another double hundred, piling on the 1st innings lead for his team as well.
He scored 205 against Uttar Pradesh in Ranji Trophy 2013/14 and this one comes nearly 10 years after that knock, this one sure to be a more special one, as it cemented his side’s chances of making the Ranji final this season. There were a few butterflies towards the end with the running, as he scrambled to get to his double century milestone, but he managed to get there eventually.

At the time of him reaching this milestone, Saurashtra was 523/8 with a 116-run lead over Karnataka, increasing their chances of winning with every run. Vasavada looked clearly more confident after he got to the double century, and tried to rotate the strike more than he was in the overs prior to getting there. He finally was dismissed with an inside edge onto his own stumps, for a score of 202.
