5th Feb 2022 will be remembered in the cricketing world as the day two really good junior teams met in the final of the 2022 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup. It was two of the pre-tournament favourites who finally made the final in West Indies, with India U-19 taking on England U-19 and both teams having their eyes set on lifting the trophy at the end of the night.
It was a pretty momentous evening as we saw some great strokes, good wickets, and of course good fielding by these junior players from England and India. The India U-19 bowlers were brilliant upfront which led to a collapse in their opponent’s batting order, finally only managing 189 all out, with Raj Bawa picking a 5-fer in the 2022 U-19 CWC final and increasing his team’s chances of winning.
U-19 CWC – Alex Horton takes stunner
The Indian chase seemed to be a very calm and composed one and the English bowlers weren’t able to find wickets from anywhere. India U-19 was cruising at one point when their opponents introduced the pace bowling option of Thomas Aspinwall and he pulled off a very unlikely wicket, that of the well set Harnoor Singh.
However, Aspinwall was not the hero of this wicket but it was wicket-keeper Alex Horton. The bowler ran in and bowled a wide bouncer and instead of shouldering arms, the left-handed Singh went in to play the pull shot and tried to pull out at the last minute. But it was too late as he got a glove through to the keeper, the latter taking an absolute screamer to get India’s second wicket of the chase.

Coming to the catch, Horton had to run to his right and instead of going with the right hand, he went with the outstretched left hand and grabbed the ball in his gloves, completing what we believe would be one of the catches of the tournament. England U-19 needed a little bit of brilliance to give themselves a chance in the game and this definitely was it.
Even after this fantastic catch from the keeper however, India U-19 were strongly in the driver’s seat and at the time of writing this, they were batting at 110/4 in the 33rd over, needing less than 4.5 runs per over with 6 wickets in hand to go on and complete the win and record their 5th ever U-19 CWC victory.
The 18-year old wicket-keeper Alex Horton scored a very important 53* in the semi final against Afghanistan U-19 and here, he pulled off a crucial catch as well. It’s these kind of important contributions that the national side selectors look out for when picking players to graduate to the senior sides. Surely, Alex Horton is one for the future?!
