One day cricket has been taking place in Afghanistan for many years but it was only in 2017 that the International Cricket Council (ICC) awarded List A status to their one day tournament. Known as the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament after the Afghan King, this event has been taking place annually in the round robin format, with eight regional Afghan teams participating.
When the 2024 Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament launched, the tournament was announced with 4 franchise teams, moving away from the traditional participation from Amo, Band-e-Amir, Boost, Mis Ainak, and Speen Ghar Regions. GAK Trophy 2024 teams were Hindukush Strikers, Mah-e-Par Stars, Pamir Legends, and Maiwand Champions!

After Speen Ghar beat Boost in the first season, it was a repeat of the final in the following season but this time, the results were the other way around, as Boost beat Speen Ghar by 5 wickets. Boost then went on to make their third consecutive final but they lost to Mis Ainak Knights; the latter won and their dominance over the next few seasons was evident.
Now a double round robin and final format competition, it’s a 50-over format being followed. We’ve seen quite a few major individual performances that have come to light during the finals of this competition’s seven editions so far but till date, no player has won the Player of the Match award on two separate occasions in the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day finals.
This tournament organised by Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) is set to only grow bigger and better in years to come, with more talented players coming out of the regional circuit.
