What a tournament this has turned out to be for AB de Villiers, the 2025 World Championship of Legends. Playing professional cricket for the first time in 4 years, the former South African batter hit an unbeaten fifty against India Legends, followed by an unbeaten 116* against England Legends in his third appearance of the league.
Next comes a lovely Sunday afternoon where SA Legends took on Australia Legends and de Villiers bettered his score, getting another century. He became not only the first to consecutive centuries in WCL history, but also the first batter to get multiple WCL centuries itself. And he did it with style, bringing up the highest score in the tournament’s history too – 123(46).

AB de Villiers scores record 123 in WCL 2025
It has always been a delight to watch ABD in full swing, but even more so now that we don’t really get to watch him in action very often. He smashed all the Australia bowlers on the day during his 187-run opening partnership with JJ Smuts, with 15 fours and 8 massive sixes to his name. Clearly, AB de Villiers is enjoying his new role at the top of the order in T20 cricket.

Now 41 years old, ABD has easily been the biggest highlight of the WCL 2025 season, making it more fun to watch than the inaugural season, where he wasn’t participating. It looked like he was playing with a joystick in his hand, making easy work of this batting effort, and besting his 41-ball century in the last game with a 39-ball century today.
He finally got dismissed in the 13th over thanks to Peter Siddle and when that finally happened, it became the second time he was out in this tournament, now boasting a batting average of 150! This was just when on-air commentators were going gaga over his big hitting, debating a potential 300-total for SA Legends, and also a potential double century for de Villiers!

Ab De Villiers retired too early from cricket. Not saying this because of these hundreds in WCL. He could have easily played 2 more years. pic.twitter.com/nTTg4JYsrI

AB De Villiers should have played more years in the IPL & International cricket. He is batting like a dream in WCL. π

Social media has been abuzz since he got to his second consecutive century in the World Championship of Legends. Many people called him the greatest to play the game, while others pondered over why he decided to walk away from the game at such an early age? Most others were just, “WOW” as they ran out of superlatives for this South African legendary cricketer.

Today, AB de Villiers showed once again why he’s among the greatest white-ball players. It feels like a disaster was narrowly avoided for GT, because the way ABD was in form today, a 200 wasn’t far off! pic.twitter.com/9d4nKLcCo8
