As compared to other sporting events and competitions in India, the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is still a newbie and is in the early days of its existence. The first edition of the tournament took place in 2016 and we’ve had a total of six editions take place so far. However, we’ve been very impressed with the quality of cricket on display in these few years since TNPL inception already.
While T20 cricket is often referred to as a batsman’s game, we’ve often seen bowlers doing really well and bringing matches home more often than you’d expect. TNPL has been no different as we’ve seen quite a few match-winning performances with the ball. Today we’re going to talk about some of those bowling achievements, listing down all TNPL 5-wicket hauls ever picked till date…
We updated this page after the TNPL 2023 season kicked off and as of now, we have a total of ten 5-fers in TNPL history (updated 24th June 2023), with a total of eight bowlers picking up these fifers and only one person having achieved this milestone on two separate occasions. These were achieved through six editions with TNPL 2020 being cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic and its restrictions.

Talking about the first ever 5-fer in the history of the Tamil Nadu Premier League, it was former Team India and Chennai Super Kings pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji who put his name down in history, using all his experience in TNPL 2016 to pick up 5/18. He represented Albert TUTI Patriots in that tournament, and this team went on to lift the inaugural edition trophy as well. See our complete TNPL 5-fers list below:

His fifer in TNPL 2016 wasn’t the only one of the tournament, as Ashwath Mukunthan picked up one a few days later. He was representing Chepauk Super Gillies at the time and a couple of years later, he repeated the same for iDream Karaikudi Kaalai in TNPL 2018, also becoming the first (and till date the only) bowler to have two 5-wicket hauls in TNPL history.

Mukunthan also holds the record for the most expensive 5-wicket haul in the tournament’s history as he bagged 5/36 in 2018 while the most frugal of the lot and the current best bowling figures in TNPL history was recorded by Ramadoss Alexander who picked up 5/9 for the Gillies in TNPL 2019; no 5-fer was picked up in the TNPL 2022 season.
