SOUTH AFRICA

Every time. Every single time. South Africa is always among the top favourites to win an ICC world tournament, but somehow, deep down in every cricket fan’s heart, we know they are just never going to take home the trophy. AB de Villiers realized that early and retired from international cricket last year itself. This year too, they come into the tournament with a strong squad, but once again we have the same question. Will they be able to shed the ‘chokers’ tag?

I have mixed feelings when it comes to this Proteas squad, with a little bit of inexperience creeping in, along with the fact that there are players with injury scares and bad form. A prime example is Hashim Amla, who topped scored with 32 in 9 innings with Cape Cobras recently, following poor scores for the national team too. However, scores of 65 and 51* in the two warm-up games may negate this factor altogether.

His opening partner is Quinton de Kock, who is coming off a fab season at IPL 2019, scoring 529 runs in 16 games and ending as the third highest run-getter of the tournament. Another player in fine form is captain Faf du Plessis, who scored 396 runs in 12 games in the IPL and a well-made 88 in a warm-up here in England. However, what follows are the likes of David Miller and JP Duminy, who have been touted as some of South Africa’s greatest players but have never had the numbers to back these statements.

Duminy has added inspiration to bow out in style as he has announced his retirement immediately after the ICC 2019 World Cup while another player to do so is Imran Tahir. Now completed 40 years of age, the youngster ended as the highest wicket-taker in the recent IPL 2019 with 26 wickets for CSK. With the likes of Joe Root, Kuldeep and Jadeja getting wickets in the warm-ups, Tahir could be a vital player in CWC 2019.

Somelike like Aiden Markram may not get too many games but expect the unassuming Rassie van der Dussen to be among the runs, as he has been continuously in the last 12 months, which saw him get a national team call up and up to four 50+ scores in his first 8 ODIs itself. Let’s not forget that the bowling seems very strong too, while the likes of Andile Phehlukwayo and Chris Morris provide vital all-rounder options, the latter however, not managing a great IPL 2019.

South Africa Squad for ICC 2019 World Cup:

Faf du Plessis (C), Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock (WK), Hashim Amla, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Chris Morris, Andile Phehlukwayo, JP Duminy, Dwaine Pretorius, Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi.

In the build up to this World Cup 2019, South Africa have won their last 6 ODIs and that momentum is what counts. The x-factor in the team is clearly going to be Kagiso Rabada, who is lethal especially in the death overs and his recent 25-wicket show at IPL 2019 displayed that.
